February 2016, Polyisocyanurate Roofing Insulation Classifications

Specifying Polyisocyanurate (ISO) is an important design consideration for ensuring long term roof performance. But there can be confusion within the product standard ASTM C1289, which references the type, class and grade of ISO. Below is a comprehensive chart to help in choosing the right ISO insulation.

Wyman Roofing & Sheet Metal

Since becoming a Carlisle applicator, Wyman Roofing & Sheet Metal has installed and warranted more than two million square feet of Carlisle SynTec single-ply roofing membrane and has completed 135 Perfect 10 roofing installations. Perfect 10 installations, which are presented to Carlisle applicators for outstanding quality and workmanship, are based upon completed roofing system inspections performed by a Carlisle field service representative. Prior to the issuance of a Carlisle membrane system warranty, a project is thoroughly reviewed for conformity to Carlisle specifications, excellence in workmanship and attention to detail.

Due to Wyman Roofing and Sheet Metal’s quality installations, they are recipients of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Perfection Awards. The Perfection Award, determined by historical installation quality metrics, recognizes the top 5% of Carlisle’s contractors annually. “Carlisle is pleased to recognize Wyman Roofing and Sheet Metal’s commitment to quality with this Perfection Award,” said Nick Shears, Carlisle’s vice president of sales and marketing.

“We greatly value those Carlisle contractors who pursue not only excellence but perfection, on each and every job.” As a Carlisle authorized applicator, the experts at Wyman Roofing & Sheet Metal have demonstrated their knowledge and experience with a full line of Carlisle roofing systems and products. To become a Carlisle authorized applicator, a company must undergo training conducted by Carlisle that covers roofing system installations and maintenance. RSS Honored with Perfection Award from Carlisle SynTec Systems

Carlisle SynTec Systems, a leading manufacturer of single-ply roofing materials, recently honored RSS Roofing Services & Solutions with its 2015 Perfection Award. Each year, Carlisle presents this award to a small percentage of its top contractors who are selected based on exceptional installation quality and warranty claim performance.

“Carlisle is happy to recognize RSS Roofing Services & Solutions’s dedication to excellence with this Perfection Award,” said Nick Shears, Carlisle Construction Materials’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Contractors who receive this award have consistently demonstrated high levels of skill and expertise, but what truly sets them apart is their commitment to perfection on every installation. RSS Roofing Services & solutions is an outstanding example of this mentality.”

The Perfection Award is a distinction that recognizes the top five percent of Carlisle’s contractors annually. To qualify, a contractor must, for each of the past seven years, have completed a minimum of 125,000 warranted square feet of Carlisle work on a minimum of five jobs per year. Recipients are then selected based on installation quality and warranty claim performance.

Specifier Monthly Newsletter, June 2015: Carlisle Contour Rib

Carlisle Contour Rib: Provides the appearance of a Standing Seam Metal Roofing with the Performance of Carlisle Fleeceback TPO or PVC.

The Carlisle Contour Rib is an innovative product that combines the advantages of a single-ply system with the aesthetic appeal of a standing seam metal roof. To achieve this look, the Contour Rib is hot-air welded in a parallel pattern to the exposed surface of Fleeceback TPO or Fleeceback PVC membrane to simulate a standing seam metal roofing system.

The Contour Rib measures 1-1/4” tall and 2-1/8” wide, including the welding flanges, while the vertical profile is 3/8” thick. The rectangular rib profile design provides exceptional shadow lines for aesthetic appeal. The Contour Rib is available in 10’ lengths and dimensionally stabilized and strengthened by a fiberglass reinforcing cord that runs the length of each section. Contour Rib sections are joined together by a non-corroding fiberglass connecting pin, ensuring continuity and compatibility throughout the application.

The Contour Rib is extruded from the same weather-resistant compounds as their associated Carlisle TPO or PVC membranes, ensuring comparable weathering characteristics and an excellent color match. Colors available include white, gray, or tan.

Think Thick

For many years, fluid-applied membranes have been specified in commercial construction to perform in wall assemblies as air barriers, vapor barriers and water resistive barriers. These products are typically used over exterior sheathing or concrete block. Fluid-applied systems provide the following advantages over sheet applied systems:

  • Improved air and water tightness
  • Monolithic installation
  • Sealing around brick ties and fasteners

Fluid-applied membrane products on the market are of diverse chemistries. Their manufacturers also specify installation at many different mil thicknesses. The mil thickness affects many properties of the installed system, including:

  • Effective substrate coverage
  • Effective seal around brick ties and fasteners
  • Effective bridging of cracks

Specifiers of roofing systems would not consider classifying systems of significantly different thickness as equals. Yet fluid-applied membrane air barriers, whose specified mil thickness varies between 7 mils and 120 mils, are often placed in the same specification and classified as “equal”. In spite of the emergence of thin mil systems, the most common specified dry film thickness of fluid-applied membrane products is 40 mils. This matches the thickness of self-adhering roofing underlayment and self-adhering air/vapor barrier membranes, both of which have a very good track record of providing effective waterproofing in their respective applications.

ROOFSENSE- Life Cycle Analysis that Makes Cents:

Since 2007, Carlisle has used its RoofSense program to help specifiers, building owners and roofing professionals optimize their roof systems by improving ROI and operating efficiency.

RoofSense is a web-based lifecycle analysis program that enables users to calculate the potential energy savings that can be realized from an energy-efficient roof design for the next 10, 20, or 30 years. RoofSense reports can demonstrate how building owners can potentially save thousands in energy and maintenance costs while improving the overall efficiency of their properties.
RoofSense is designed to provide a simple, efficient and accurate assessment of a building’s project energy costs based on both its location and the materials used in its roof construction. All data that is compiled in the RoofSense program is gathered from independent sources, such as the United States Department of Energy and the building owner’s utility bills, ensuring premium, non-biased accuracy. With RoofSense, building owners can compare and contrast the energy savings of a wide variety of roofing systems, including membranes and insulation, for project locations in every zip code in the United States. RoofSense can calculate the optimal R-value and membrane color based on location and energy costs, and even calculates the owner’s overall return on investment related to roof expenditures.

Optimizing energy is a priority for building owners and the design community. Carlisle’s RoofSense program is a resource that can show how additional insulation or a higher grade roof system can provide operating cost savings. When these long-term financial cost benefits are considered, a roof system with enhanced performance makes sense.
